MISSION STATEMENT OF THE THE MOUNT HOLYOKE NEWS
We, the staff of The Mount Holyoke News, pledge ourselves to the service of the student body of Mount Holyoke College through the publication of first-rate, professional journalism.
While our material should be relevant to the entire community, our primary allegiance is now and will always be to the students. To this end, we affirm our commitment to independence by functioning without a faculty advisor. A student-run paper should be just that.
We believe that knowledge is power. By providing accurate, balanced and relevant coverage of campus events, we will empower all students to make their voices heard and to take ownership of the decisions made by the Mount Holyoke College community.
To better represent the interests of the students, we reserve the right to decide what we print in our pages. However, in the interest of providing full, balanced coverage, we will always serve as a public forum for those willing to be accountable for their words. All opinions have a place in The Mount Holyoke News, regardless of their popularity.
We seek to be the community's first and best source for important information. We will never back down from a story that is relevant, valuable or necessary for the student body to read. Through accuracy and impartiality, we will remain an authoritative and trustworthy voice. We can maintain our readers' trust by promptly correcting missteps along the way.
Our relationship to those in positions of power should never be deliberately adversarial. Controversy fuels the news but doesn?t define it; we will give as much energy and dedication to seeking achievement. Our legacy will be one of incisive journalism tempered by respect and the sincere wish to be constructive.
The News is always conscious that it stands representative of a highly intelligent and discerning body of women that expect and deserve a newspaper they can be proud of. They hold us to a high standard; the standard to which we hold ourselves must be even higher.
Our newspaper will succeed best when we hold their interests and welfare as our own.
