Spice Up Your Life!

I had a flashback last Thursday night.
I'm in the third grade again. It's recess and my best friend Steve, wearing a Spice Girls watch, is performing "Wannabe" in the school yard. Like, full on performing it. He's dancing, singing and stomping his feet to imitate Scary Spice (he's not gay, I swear).
The Spice Girls defined about two years of my childhood. I like to think of that as a time when cheesy pop music was good, when girl power was cool. It was a time before Britney and Christina sexed up the music scene, and before Lindsay Lohan, Paris Hilton and now Heidi Montag destroyed the genre.
Unfortunately, I never saw the Spice Girls during their pop reign. But I made up for that missed opportunity last week when I made the long trek from South Hadley to Long Island for their reunion tour. And even though it wasn't exactly like my childhood (Posh is quite the robot these days), seeing the Spice Girls live is still a special experience.
This time, instead of being with Steve behind Brookside Place School, I was with three of my closest friends. Even though the Spice Girls are definitely not the greatest dancers or singers, they're amazing performers and every moment of that show was the perfect blend of girl power and fierceness.
