Controversial George Lois Esquire covers show at MoMA

"A good magazine cover, like a strong package design, should memorably dramatize what's inside," reads the George Lois quote next to one of his iconic magazine covers. Dramatize is exactly what Lois' work does, but not exclusively. Lois, as well Jean Prouvé, is the focus of a MoMA exhibit that demonstrates the power of art and design when it is created for mass consumption. The two artists have taken on the concept of art for the people in two different and compelling ways. The exhibit is an inspiring way to start off your summer vacation, offering a look at modern art that can recharge anyone's curiosity after a long year of learning.

Much has already been said about the Mount Holyoke Confessional and how damaging it is to our community. We talk about the cattiness of the posts and the hateful messages left on the site for anyone to read. Even though I think all of that is true, I believe the real problem of the Confessional is that it reveals something ugly about Mount Holyoke-nobody talks to one another about problems at the school.

Beyond the gates of Mount Holyoke College and across the Connecticut River is the historically and culturally rich city of Holyoke. The census of 2000 indicates that 41 percent of Holyoke residents are of Latino decent and almost one-third live below the poverty level. Although this so-called "gateway city" is in the process of urban and civic revitalization, its industrial past has left in its wake a host of social, economic and ecological problems.

Cornell Nash doesn't wear a suit to work, and he doesn't have a six-figure salary. Nash has a business degree from the University of Iowa, but it doesn't mean much to him. He is a little bemused and very bored by the typical suburban lifestyle. So he stays away from it. He doesn't do things the conventional way.

Sitting across the table from me outside Rao's, she leaned forward in her chair intently to tell me her story, one that has shaped so much of her life.

Every spring break, thousands of young people migrate from their colleges to Florida or Mexico in the name of non-stop partying. But Ashley Nash-Hahn '08, who studied in Copenhagen last year, spent her two-week long break on the couches of people she met on the Internet, armed with nothing but her backpack and a couple of euros. "All of my friends decided to go to Prague together and stay in hostels," said Nash-Hahn. "But I think that in the end, I had the opportunity to really make friends with people in Europe."

But what is the true face of diversity? "To a lot of people, I'm not diverse, because I'm still a white person even though I've lived in England and China," says Third Culture Kid Brigid Hurn Maloney '11.

The thought of travel provokes a very peculiar feeling of both excitement and doubt. It perhaps comes with the strange concept of traveling to the unknown and encountering the already studied. And perhaps it leads to the exact opposite-traveling to the already studied and encountering the unknown.

Life without Scotland would be life without telephones, television and Harry Potter. We wouldn't know of penicillin, golf or the Kelvin scale without the small (but mighty) northern half of Great Britain. The life we lead would be noticeably different, and substantially less developed, without the contributions of the Scots.

For me, a flight starts the second I step into an airport. I stand in a corner, waiting to go aboard, and watch people pass by. Airline stewards smile at me dressed in their neat uniforms with carefully chosen fragrances. Pilots with the brims of their hats shadowing their faces quickly walk by, leaving a handsome view of their backs. Frowning businessmen type on their HP laptops and talk loudly on their latest brand name phones. Young couples look over their shoulders to check on their dawdling children in the maze of shops.

Your mother was right: too much of a good thing is bad for you. Many people believe that because vitamins and minerals play an important role in being healthy-more is better-but this is simply not true. Some vitamins and minerals, like vitamin A and iron, are toxic at high levels, while others, like vitamin C, can be excreted in the urine if taken in large doses. In fact, overdosing on certain vitamins or minerals can lead to serious consequences.

The weather may not be chilly and 35° anymore, but unfortunately this is no time to pack up the cough drops and tissues. Though no longer in the midst of flu season, the warm weather brings to campus both the beautiful scene of blossoming flowers and trees and students relaxing on the green with plenty of unwelcome ones: lots of tissues, eye drops and plenty of Zyrtec© and Claritin©.

To me, the idea of an online book club seems some kind of wonderful. And that is essentially what LibraryThing is: the largest book club in cyber-space. Because it gets information from Amazon.com, the Library of Congress and other international libraries, it allows you to take all of the books you own or enjoy and catalog them, library-style, on the Internet. Not only can your own personal library be online, but you can share it with friends and other members of the cyber-space- using world.

Opposites Attract in Carol Gilligan's novel Kyra is Commencement speaker's first fictional foray

Nothing describes Carol Gilligan's first work of fiction quite as well as the M.C. Escher print Sky and Water I. This print shows a tessellation of fish and birds in which, due to shading and impeccable design, the two distinct creatures appear to become one. It is a statement about water and sky, and about reconceptualizing the world in such a way that the twain can meet. Gilligan's novel, Kyra, follows this same vein, playing both literally and figuratively with earth and sky; by the conclusion, neither the characters nor the reader can be sure which way is up, because it suddenly seems possible that fish could fly.
